Candle That Unites Generations: Honouring the Memory of the Holodomor Victims

One of the key priorities of the Ukrainian Centre is to create a space where every Ukrainian family can feel a connection to their homeland and the support of those around them. On days of national mourning, such as the Day of Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims, this sense of unity becomes especially meaningful. We come together not only to recall historical facts, but to share a collective pain and, through creativity and words, help both children and adults grasp the depth of our shared history.

On 22 November, the Day of Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims, we honoured together the millions of innocent lives lost. It is a day of silence, prayer, and shared responsibility — to remember and to pass this truth on.

Art as a tool of remembrance

On this day, we gathered to connect with this painful chapter of our history through creativity and shared presence. Throughout the day, events brought together different generations:

  • A themed workshop for children helped our youngest visitors understand the importance of this date through accessible and meaningful imagery.
  • A workshop on traditional Ukrainian decorative painting for adults became a space for reflection on the tragedy.

Living stories through performance

A particularly powerful emotional response was evoked by the playback theatre “Vakhtery”. Their deep and moving performance allowed each participant to look into the past through the lens of personal stories. It reminded us how deeply personal this national tragedy remains for every Ukrainian family.

We are sincerely grateful to the guests who shared this difficult day with our community and addressed the audience with heartfelt words:

  • Viktor Hamotskyi — Deputy Ambassador of Ukraine to Lithuania
  • Nataliia Shertvytiene — Head of the Ukrainian Community in Vilnius
  • Father Yosafat — Rector of the Holy Trinity Greek Catholic Church in Vilnius

We thank everyone who was with us, who shared this silence and lit their candle of remembrance. Your presence is a testament to the fact that the Ukrainian voice continues to resonate through the years and cannot be silenced.
